A native of Detroit, Michigan, Ann Weaver began her musical studies at age six with her parents, both of whom were members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at the time. She began her college studies at Arizona State University, then completed her Bachelor of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she was given the Annual Viola Award for Outstanding Achievement. She earned her master’s degree in Music Performance at Rice University, where she graduated with honors. Her teachers include Dr. William Magers, James Van Valkenburg, Heidi Castleman, Wayne Brooks (principal violist of the Houston Symphony), and Roberto Diaz (principal violist of the Philadelphia Orchestra). Her chamber music coaches have included Anne Epperson and members of the Julliard, Guarneri, and Cleveland String Quartets.
When did you start playing your instrument? I started violin at six and switched to viola at ten.
Why did you choose the viola? I preferred the lower pitch and deeper sound of the viola when compared to the violin.
Are you from a musical family? Yes, my parents were professional musicians, and all of my siblings learned piano, a wind instrument, and a string instrument. Two out of four of us are professionals.
What other instruments do you play? Currently, only viola. In school I studied piano and bassoon.
What makes the viola special? It’s not as well-known as some of the other orchestral instruments. All instruments have special qualities, but I really like the mellow tone of the viola.
Guilty musical secret: I like heavy metal music.
What would your career be if you hadn’t chosen to be a musician? Something to do with writing or literature.
Hobbies: I love to read and travel.
Favorite composer: Brahms
Hometown: Detroit, Michigan
