Ian Jones

IAN JONES, cellist, grew up in Piedmont, California. He has performed as a member of various orchestras in the Midwest, the Honolulu Symphony in Hawaii, and in October 2011 became a member of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. Participation in music festivals has taken him to Aspen, Colorado; Brevard, North Carolina; Schoodic Point, Maine; and Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He has studied at the University of Arizona with Mark Votapek, UCLA with Andrew Shulman, and Indiana University, where his teachers included Eric Kim, Janos Starker, Sharon Robinson and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi. At Indiana he was a member of the university’s resident Kuttner String Quartet. He collaborated onstage in chamber music with Joshua Bell and members of the Orion Quartet, and benefited from close study with Alexander Kerr, Atar Arad, Menahem Pressler, the Orion Quartet and Mauricio Fuks. His love affair with music and the cello began with his attendance at the Crowden School in Berkeley, California, where he learned much from, among others, Anne Crowden, Milly Rosner, David Morris and Arkadi Serper. He also enjoys hobbies and sports such as tennis, skiing, reading and fiddling with computers.
