Alexander Lipay has been the principal flutist of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra since 2006. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Lipay was assistant principal flutist of the Debut Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles, principal flutist of the Cascade Symphony Orchestra in Seattle and principal flutist of the USC and UC Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestras.
He has performed extensively as a soloist and as a chamber musician, playing various recitals with woodwind quartet, quintet and other ensembles. He performed as a soloist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra in 2008 and 2009, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in 2007, and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra in 2005 and 2006.
He has played as a soloist at many music festivals, including the prestigious International Festival "Musical Olympus" in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the International Music Festival in Moulin d’Ande, France. He was the 1st prize winner of several competitions held in the US, including the MTNA Young Artist National Woodwind Competition in 2004.
Principal teachers include James Walker, Jill Felber, Zart Dombourian-Eby, and Paul Berkowitz (piano). In 2004, Alexander studied with Sir James Galway in Switzerland. Alexander holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara where he graduated with 2 majors: flute and piano.
When did you start playing your instrument? I started playing the flute when I was 11-12 years old.
Why did you choose your instrument? I chose flute because I like the quality of sound that it can produce.
Are you from a musical family? Yes. Both my parents finished musical conservatory training as pianists. My grandfather was a professional flutist. He was a great teacher as well as a principal in an orchestra.
What other instruments do you play? I also play piano.
Do you have any advice for kids learning to play the flute? Practice every day; also participate in sports to develop strong, healthy lungs.
What would your career be if you hadn't chosen to be a musician? I don't know, but it would probably have to do with sports.
Do you have any hobbies? I love to go fishing.
Who are your favorite composers? Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Shostakovich.
